What to know about China
China is the one market in this batch where routing matters more than price. Most travel eSIMs sold for China roam onto a local network but carry the traffic out through a gateway in Hong Kong or Singapore, so the services a visitor expects to reach generally work. Some plans break out locally instead and behave like a domestic connection. Providers do not always state which they do, and it is worth asking before you buy rather than discovering it on arrival.
China also requires SIM registration. Pricing is otherwise reasonable at a median of 1.16 USD per gigabyte across 1,224 plans from 10 providers, with the best at 0.27, 36% advertising 5G and 92% permitting hotspot.

How to choose
Match the allowance to the trip, not the price
The average plan sold here is 16.3 GB over 31 days. Buying the cheapest plan and topping up twice usually costs more than buying the right size once — check whether the plan supports top-up before relying on it.
Treat "unlimited" as a threshold
63 plans here are sold as unlimited. Almost all mean full speed up to a fair-use threshold and throttling after it. Compare those on price per day; a price per gigabyte for an unlimited plan is a number with no denominator.
Check the network, not the brand
36% of plans here advertise 5G, but the network belongs to a local host operator. The provider table below shows which operators each reseller actually rides — that is what decides coverage once you leave the city.
Know when the clock starts
Some plans start counting at purchase, some on install, some on first connection at the destination. A seven-day plan bought three days early is a four-day plan if it starts at purchase. Where a provider does not publish the trigger, we mark it unknown rather than guess.

How to install
Most phones released since 2019 do. Dial *#06# — if an EID number appears alongside the IMEI, the handset has an eSIM. A carrier-locked phone may still refuse a second profile.
Buy while you still have reliable internet. Whether to install immediately depends on when the plan's clock starts — check the activation trigger on the plan you chose.
The provider emails a QR code. On iOS: Settings → Mobile Service → Add eSIM. On Android: Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → Add. Keep the code; some providers let you reinstall with it, others do not.
This is the step people miss. A travel eSIM is technically roaming on a host network, so data roaming must be enabled for that line — and turned off for your home line, unless you want a bill.

The default order is a published formula: value percentile, feature completeness, data freshness, provider accuracy, coverage fit, first-party ratings and promo availability. Commission weight is zero, and no payout data reaches the ranking code at all.

Prices are re-read continuously and this page was last recomputed on 27 August 2026. A sync whose numbers move implausibly is rejected rather than published.

The lowest price per gigabyte currently available is 0.20 GBP, against a market median of 0.95 GBP. Sort the table by "Best value" to see the full ordering — that sort ignores our editorial ranking entirely and uses price per gigabyte alone.
How much data do I need for China?
The average plan sold for this destination carries 16.3 GB over 31 days, which is what most travellers buy rather than what most travellers use. Maps, messaging and occasional browsing run well under 1 GB a week; video streaming is what moves you into the larger tiers.
Do eSIMs support 5G in China?
36% of the plans we track advertise 5G here. Note what that figure is: it is the share of plans that *claim* 5G, not a coverage guarantee. The network you actually attach to belongs to a local host operator, not to the reseller, so real-world speed depends on their build-out in China rather than on the plan you buy.
Can I use a personal hotspot with an eSIM in China?
91% of plans here state that tethering is allowed. Where a provider does not say, we record it as unspecified rather than assuming yes — tethering is most often restricted on plans marketed as unlimited, which is exactly where people expect to be able to share a connection.
Do I need to show ID to buy an eSIM for China?
Yes, frequently. China is a market where registration rules mean many providers ask for a passport or ID upload before the eSIM will activate. Use the "No ID check" filter to see only plans that do not require it — arriving with an eSIM you cannot activate is a common and avoidable problem.
What does "unlimited" actually mean on these plans?
Almost always a fair-use threshold followed by throttling, not uncapped data. 63 plans here are marketed as unlimited.
