Our picks
Four plans, four different jobs
One top ranked plan and three answers to the questions travellers actually ask. A card marked "Editor's pick" was chosen by a person and carries their reasoning; "Top ranked" is simply the top of our published formula, which nobody chose. Every one is checkable against the table below in a click.

Coverage
Whose network you are actually on
An eSIM is a reseller agreement, not a network. These are the host operators the plans in Germany attach to, counted across every plan we sampled.
Host operator data comes from the providers' own published coverage. Where a feed lists the same operators against every country in a multi-country bundle, we discard that attribution rather than credit a network it does not describe.

Local knowledge
What to know about Germany
Germany lists 1,426 plans from 10 providers at a median of 1.00 USD per gigabyte, with the best available at 0.15 and allowances averaging around 18.7 GB — the largest in this list.
Around a third advertise 5G, which understates what German networks actually carry and reflects how conservatively resellers describe their coverage. Hotspot is permitted on 93%, and 24 unlimited plans are listed, the fewest among the western European markets we track.
Because Germany is included in essentially every Europe-wide bundle, its price profile is nearly identical to Austria, Italy and Portugal. The choice that matters is not which German plan but whether you need a German plan at all — if your trip crosses into neighbouring countries, the regional option is usually the better buy.
Before you buy
How to choose
Match the allowance to the trip, not the price
The average plan sold here is 30.9 GB over 29 days. Buying the cheapest plan and topping up twice usually costs more than buying the right size once — check whether the plan supports top-up before relying on it.
Treat "unlimited" as a threshold
839 plans here are sold as unlimited. Almost all mean full speed up to a fair-use threshold and throttling after it. Compare those on price per day; a price per gigabyte for an unlimited plan is a number with no denominator.
Check the network, not the brand
60% of plans here advertise 5G, but the network belongs to a local host operator. The provider table below shows which operators each reseller actually rides — that is what decides coverage once you leave the city.
Know when the clock starts
Some plans start counting at purchase, some on install, some on first connection at the destination. A seven-day plan bought three days early is a four-day plan if it starts at purchase. Where a provider does not publish the trigger, we mark it unknown rather than guess.
Setup
How to install
Most phones released since 2019 do. Dial *#06# — if an EID number appears alongside the IMEI, the handset has an eSIM. A carrier-locked phone may still refuse a second profile.
Buy while you still have reliable internet. Whether to install immediately depends on when the plan's clock starts — check the activation trigger on the plan you chose.
The provider emails a QR code. On iOS: Settings → Mobile Service → Add eSIM. On Android: Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → Add. Keep the code; some providers let you reinstall with it, others do not.
This is the step people miss. A travel eSIM is technically roaming on a host network, so data roaming must be enabled for that line — and turned off for your home line, unless you want a bill.

How we rank this market
Collect
We read 7,051 live plans from 63 providers directly from their published catalogues, and normalise every allowance to integer megabytes and every price to integer minor units.
Separate
Unlimited and pay-per-GB plans are excluded from every median and percentile. A throttling threshold is not an allowance, and mixing the two makes a gigabyte look cheaper than it is.
Rank
The default order is a published formula: value percentile, feature completeness, data freshness, provider accuracy, coverage fit, first-party ratings and promo availability. Commission weight is zero, and no payout data reaches the ranking code at all.
Refresh
Prices are re-read continuously and this page was last recomputed on 13 October 2026. A sync whose numbers move implausibly is rejected rather than published.
Questions
Germany eSIM questions
How much does an eSIM for Germany cost?
Plans start at 0.33 GBP. We track 7,051 plans from 63 providers, and the median works out at 1.00 GBP per gigabyte once unlimited and fair-use plans are excluded from the calculation.
Which eSIM gives the best value in Germany?
The lowest price per gigabyte currently available is 0.11 GBP, against a market median of 1.00 GBP. Sort the table by "Best value" to see the full ordering — that sort ignores our editorial ranking entirely and uses price per gigabyte alone.
How much data do I need for Germany?
The average plan sold for this destination carries 30.9 GB over 29 days, which is what most travellers buy rather than what most travellers use. Maps, messaging and occasional browsing run well under 1 GB a week; video streaming is what moves you into the larger tiers.
Do eSIMs support 5G in Germany?
60% of the plans we track advertise 5G here. Note what that figure is: it is the share of plans that *claim* 5G, not a coverage guarantee. The network you actually attach to belongs to a local host operator, not to the reseller, so real-world speed depends on their build-out in Germany rather than on the plan you buy.
Can I use a personal hotspot with an eSIM in Germany?
64% of plans here state that tethering is allowed. Where a provider does not say, we record it as unspecified rather than assuming yes — tethering is most often restricted on plans marketed as unlimited, which is exactly where people expect to be able to share a connection.
What does "unlimited" actually mean on these plans?
Almost always a fair-use threshold followed by throttling, not uncapped data. 839 plans here are marketed as unlimited. We show a price per gigabyte for those only where the provider publishes the full-speed threshold, and we exclude every unlimited plan from the median — a throttling threshold is not an allowance, and mixing the two distorts what a gigabyte appears to cost.
When does the validity period start?
It depends on the plan, and it is worth checking. Some start counting at purchase, some on installation, and some only when the eSIM first connects to a network at your destination. A seven-day plan bought three days before you fly is a four-day plan if it starts at purchase. Where a provider publishes the trigger we show it; where they do not, we mark it unknown rather than guessing.
