Best eSIM for China

Plans start at 0.40 CAD. We track 6,599 plans from 63 providers, and the median works out at 2.56 CAD per gigabyte once unlimited and fair-use plans are excluded from the calculation.

The lowest price per gigabyte currently available is 0.37 CAD, against a market median of 2.56 CAD. Sort the table by "Best value" to see the full ordering — that sort ignores our editorial ranking entirely and uses price per gigabyte alone.

The average plan sold for this destination carries 32.0 GB over 29 days, which is what most travellers buy rather than what most travellers use. Maps, messaging and occasional browsing run well under 1 GB a week; video streaming is what moves you into the larger tiers.

55% of the plans we track advertise 5G here. Note what that figure is: it is the share of plans that *claim* 5G, not a coverage guarantee. The network you actually attach to belongs to a local host operator, not to the reseller, so real-world speed depends on their build-out in China rather than on the plan you buy.

59% of plans here state that tethering is allowed. Where a provider does not say, we record it as unspecified rather than assuming yes — tethering is most often restricted on plans marketed as unlimited, which is exactly where people expect to be able to share a connection.

Yes, frequently. China is a market where registration rules mean many providers ask for a passport or ID upload before the eSIM will activate. Use the "No ID check" filter to see only plans that do not require it — arriving with an eSIM you cannot activate is a common and avoidable problem.

Almost always a fair-use threshold followed by throttling, not uncapped data. 671 plans here are marketed as unlimited. We show a price per gigabyte for those only where the provider publishes the full-speed threshold, and we exclude every unlimited plan from the median — a throttling threshold is not an allowance, and mixing the two distorts what a gigabyte appears to cost.

It depends on the plan, and it is worth checking. Some start counting at purchase, some on installation, and some only when the eSIM first connects to a network at your destination. A seven-day plan bought three days before you fly is a four-day plan if it starts at purchase. Where a provider publishes the trigger we show it; where they do not, we mark it unknown rather than guessing.
